This tree is native to the arid, mountainous regions of India and Pakistan, where it grows at altitudes of between 250 and 900 metres. Its resin has always been used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and analgesic by Ayurvedic medicine. It is also of interest to Western science, where it has been the subject of clinical trials since the end of the 20th century.
It is made up of terpenes, including six major ones, boswellic acids, which are its active ingredients. They inhibit the formation of leukotrienes - lipid mediators that promote inflammation by amplifying the damage caused to tissues by free radicals.
The boswellic acids that penetrate the inflamed tissues also improve blood circulation. This extra blood supply nourishes and drains the area, helping to eliminate inflammation.
